Volunteer Teacher's Heart
I was once a volunteer catechist in our Province. As far as I can remember, I was teaching kids that are age from 6 years old to 11 years old. Its been a while since then. When I heard about Cornerstone, I got curious and when I already had the idea of what it was, I got captivated. It brings back the memories I had before and made me feel excited in doing it again. However, this thing is different. It is more of Academics discussion, unlike on what I am used to do, I discussed about Religion practices before. But, one thing is for sure, I will be dealing with kids and that makes my heart alive and kicking once again, as I love being with kids.
July 2016, 1st session of Cornerstone in ERSES. I don't know what to expect, all I want is to serve, be with the kids and teach again. No one says from experienced volunteers of Cornerstone that it is going to be an easy thing, they never mention it is going to be hard also. Enticing phrase they would always say, "It is going to be a fun experience". As a person who is up for fun and new experiences, that made me go for it. And it was indeed fun!
My tutees, those were my inspiration. They are like an invisible rope that shows up when Saturday comes to pull me towards the school. Every Saturday, Cornerstone becomes my Weekend routine. It feels like an incomplete weekend if I don't get to see my tutees, that I usually call my "babies". Even if they are so naughty, hard -headed kids, playful and sometimes losses my patience, I still love them and I seriously don't know why. I love how they smile whenever they see me arrived, those cheerful greetings they give me when I comes in the room and those jest they throw at me that sometimes I don't really understand at all. Well, must be a kid jokes that is out of my understanding, but in response I will still laugh even if i have no idea what that joke was.
Cornerstone brings me back to my old duty. It taught me too many lessons. It lengthens my patience and understanding to children. It gives me purpose every Saturday, made me realize how I can share my time righteously without expecting something in return, because smile of those kids is enough to see how God is pleased and how He smiles at me too. Through Cornerstone, I met too many people who have the same passion and interest as I have and that I am blessed. This might be the first school year that I have attended in Cornerstone, but I am confident enough to say that this is not going to be the last! Cornerstone has now have a special place in my heart that I will always find a way to fill its hunger and thirst.
